首位に1打差の2位で決勝ラウンドに進んだタイガー・ウッズ

PGAツアーの祭典、第五のメジャーと呼ばれるザ・プレーヤーズチャンピオンシップの話題を中心に、タケ小山プロがPGAツアーの広報責任者であるトム・アルター氏にインタビュー。

タケ：ハロー、トム！

トム：元気ですか？

タケ：元気ですよ！今週はPGAツアーの最重要トーナメントですね。

トム：とてもとても大きな大会です。最強のフィールド、ベストプレーヤーが世界中から集まって素晴らしい試合を展開しています。

タケ：いま見てますが、かなり良い感じのリーダーボードですね。

トム：最高のリーダーボードですよ！セルヒオ、タイガー、ウェストウッド、それにマット・クーチャーにハンター・メイハン。数々のビッグトーナメントを制してきたビッグネームが名を連ねていますね。最高のフィニッシュが期待できそうです。

タケ：今年の17番はどんな感じですか？池ぽちゃは今のところ幾つありましたか？

トム：木曜日が15個で、金曜日が9個です。平均スコアはちょうどイーブンパーくらいですね。見た目は怖いホールですが、スコアを伸ばす選手もたくさんいます。

タケ：池ぽちゃ24個！

トム：そう、24個です。

タケ：（笑）イイネ！

トム：でも今週はこれ以上はあまり落ちないと思いますよ。風が吹いてませんから。このフィールドですから、風さえなければピンの近くに打ってきます。

タケ：これまでに1番たくさん池ぽちゃがあったのはどの年でしょう？

トム：10年くらい前でしょうか。100個近く入りましたね。

タケ：（笑）

トム：風が強いと本当にトリッキーで難しくなります。逆に風がないと比較的易しいホールになります。今日のピンポジションだと、グリーン奥ですから、手前が広く、オーバーすると危険というところですね。

タケ：1番難しいピンポジションはどこでしょう？

トム：やはり最終日のピンポジションでしょう。伝統的に右コーナー端に切ります。良いショットが打てればピッタリ寄せることができますが、ミスするとそこから2パットすら難しいような状況になりますね。あ、今丁度アダム・スコットが17番のティーに来ましたね。ナイスショットで4メートルくらいに付けました。ロリー・マキロイも17番ですね。今日はイーブンパーでもがいてます。良いショットを打ちましたよ！ピンに真っ直ぐです！あ、グリーン奥に行って、、、止まったー！！！危うく池ぽちゃでしたね。

タケ：（笑）さて、プレーヤーズチャンピオンシップは以前は3月に開催されていましたが、数年前から5月になりましたよね。

トム：はい。6年前ですね。より穏やかな天候と硬くて速いコースセッティングを目指して5月に変更になりました。以前はいろいろな芝をオーバーシードしていましたが、今ではその必要はなくなりましたのでコースも少し変わったと思います。

タケ：ギャラリーに変わりはありましたか？

トム：面白いことにギャラリーの雰囲気には変化がありましたね。3月はアメリカ北部の人たちが休暇で来ていましたが、この時期はその方々は来なくなりました。そのかわり地元の人達がたくさん来るようになりました。あとは大会が大きくなるに連れ、日本をはじめ世界中からたくさんの方々が訪れるようになりました。今週は大会史上過去最高の動員数を記録しています。

タケ：今のところ何人くらいでしょうか？

トム：昨日は2万5千人

タケ：素晴らしい！

トム：今日は3万人

タケ：ワオ！

トム：明日は4万人が予想されています。

タケ：すごいですね！最終日はどうでしょう？

トム：最終日は土曜日よりは少し減ると思いますが、3万5千人くらいはいきそうな気がします。さらに、もしまたセルヒオとタイガーが最終組になったりしたら、観に来る人は増えるでしょうね。

タケ：間違いないですね。お時間をありがとうございました！また来月も宜しくお願いします！

トム：こちらこそ！

Take: Hello Tom!

Tom: How are you?

Take: Fine thank you! So this week, TPC is like a PGA tour's flagship tournament right?

Tom: Yes. Very very big championship. Strongest field, all the best players in the world are here, and they are putting on quite a show so far.

Take: I see very nice leaderboard right now.

Tom: Awesome leaderboard! Sergio and Tiger and Lee westward and Matt Kucher and Hunter Mahan. A lot of big big names who have won great championships are on the leaderboard right now, should make for an exciting finish.

Take: We'd like to know how the 17th hole, the island green hole is played. How many balls are in the water so far this year?

Tom: There was 15 balls in the water on thursday, and 9 balls in the water on friday so far. It's playing almost exactly as even par. Pretty scarily looking but players usually take advantage of it.

Take: 24 balls in the water!!

Tom: Yes. 24 so far.

Take: (laugh) イイネ.

Tom: But I will be surprised if there's many more balls in the water. The winds aren't blowing. When the wind doesn't blow, , These are the best players in the world, and they hit the ball pretty close to the flag.

Take: Which year did you have the most balls in the water?

Tom: About 10 years ago, there was almost a hundred balls in the water.

Take: (laugh)

Tom: When the wind blows hard, that hole plays really really tricky. That's why without wind, it's fairly easy. And they try to tuck the pin into some spots, like todays flag is all the way in the back of the green, so there's plenty of room short of it, but only a few yards over the greens.

Take: Where do you think is the toughest pin on 17th ?

Tom: The toughest pin is the sunday pin. Far right corner. We traditionally put it there, because if you hit a good shot, you can go right at the flag stick or you can catch a noup... and that will kind of truckle the ball towards the hole. But if you don't do that, then you'll have tough trial to just to even make two puts. Adam Scott in on the 17th tee right now and he just hit good shot to about 15ft and Rory Mcllroy is playing the hole right now and he has kind of struggled today, he's even par so far and he is taking dead aim , that's from live play by play, and he hit it to the back of green and it stoooooped just before, it almost went into the water!!

Take: The players championship use to be held in end of March, now moved to mid May.

Tom: Yes, it was 6 years ago, they moved to May to take advantage of warmer weather so that the course would play firm and fast like it will this weekend, instead of having overseeded with different kind of glass that make it little bit different.

Take: How about the galleries? Big difference between end of March and mid May?

Tom: It's interesting the galleries are little bit different. In March, people from the northern part of United States would be on vacation so it's a little bit different. Those people aren't necessarily here anymore, but it's become more of a community event. More people from the local come out and also as the tournament grows in stature, more people from the world are coming, so ,, this week they have bigger galleries than anytime in the history of the event.

Take: So How many galleries so far this week?

Tom: They had 25,000 yesterday and ,

Take: Beautiful!!

Tom: And over 30,000 today

Take: Wow!!

Tom: And they expect 40,000 tomorrow.

Take: 25, 30, 40 thousand!! How about Sunday?

Tom: Sunday will be a little bit less than Saturday, but still 35,000 or so ,,,

Take: OK

Tom: If we can have Sergio and tiger in the final group again, there will definitely be a lot to come out to see them.

Take: I bet!!
