トム：どうも！元気ですか？

タケ：元気ですよ。そちらは？

トム：こちらは最高です。今日も全米プロ観戦を楽しんでいますよ。

タケ：私は今週ゴルフネットワークで解説をやっているんですよ。

トム：オー！それは素晴らしい！良い仕事をされていることでしょう。

タケ：2日間見続けていますが、ジェイソン・ダフナーが良いプレーしていますね。

トム：メジャー記録タイの63をマークしましたからね。

タケ：うんうん。

トム：63をマークしたのはメジャー大会史上26人目です。歴史的なラウンドですよ。簡単な上りのパットを外して62を逃してしまいましたが、それでも63は素晴らしいです。

タケ：今週は誰が優勝すると思いますか？

トム：大会前はリー・ウェストウッドが来ると思っていました。初日66をマークして良いスタートを切りましたが、昨日73を打ってしまいトップから8打差。 残り36ホールで追いつくのは厳しいかもしれませんね。

タケ：タイガーはどうですか？

トム：タイガーはたった今も18番でティショットを曲げていました。メジャー大会では逆転優勝したことがないですし、チャンスはないと思いますよ。先週のように早い段階で大きくリードして、トップを守るというのが彼の勝利の方程式だと思います。今週は彼よりも石川や松山の方がずっと良いプレーをしていると思います。

タケ：トムに聞きたいのですが、USGAは全米オープン、R&Aは全英オープン、PGAオブアメリカが全米プロをやっていますよね。

トム：はい。

タケ：そしてマスターズ委員会がマスターズを主催。これが地球上のメジャー4大会全てです。あなたたちはメジャー大会をやりたいと思っていませんか？

トム：う～ん。我々はザ・プレイヤーズチャンピオンシップという最上級の大会をやっていますが。

タケ：うんうん。

トム：これは我々にとってはメジャー大会のようなものです。しかし世の中にはメジャーが4つあればそれで良いとも思っています。歴史には逆らえませんから。それに正直なことを言うと、第5のメジャーが誕生するとしたら、それはアジアに誕生するかもしれません。ゴルフ人口が飛躍的に増加していますし、オリンピックの成功を受けて期待が高まっています。というか、オリンピックが第5のメジャーになる可能性もありますね。

タケ：チャンピオンズツアーにはメジャーが5つありますし、LPGAも5つあります。メジャー大会を超える最高賞金総額を誇るザ・プレイヤーズチャンピオンシップをメジャー大会にしたいと思わないのですか？

トム：う～ん。最高の大会というステータスは欲しいですが、それは我々が言うべきことではないと思います。歴史に背くことになりますから。選手や記者が言うのと違い、我々が一方的にメジャー大会を宣言するのは強引過ぎると思います。

タケ：なるほど。ところで、2016年にゴルフはオリンピック競技になりますが、PGAツアーからも何人か派遣されるのでしょうか？

トム：もちろんです。

タケ：え？本当に？（笑）

トム：PGAツアーはオリンピックの成功へ向けてあらゆる協力を惜しまないという姿勢で居ます。世界のトップ選手たちに不公平がないようにスケジュールを決めなければなりませんしね。

タケ：うんうん。USGAとはすでに話し合ってるのですか？

トム：ツアーやR&AやUSGAを含め、全ての組織のトップが集まって協議を重ねています。先の全英オープンで全員集合して会議があり、今週も全米プロに合わせて集合して会議が行われています。

タケ：オリンピックのプレーフォーマットは決まっていませんよね？

トム：決まりましたよ！72ホールのストロークプレー、スタンダードなフォーマットです。クオリファイは世界ランクからになります。さらに、これを受けてワールドカップのフォーマットが変わりました。これまでは各国から少数しか出場できませんでしたが、オリンピックで採用されるクオリファイ制度を使って、数年かけてあるべき姿になってくれればと思っています。

タケ：1チーム何人？

トム：わかりませんが、1つの国ごとに最大4人くらいだったと思います。

タケ：オリンピックは8月だから全米プロと勝ち合いますね。

トム：そうなんです。どうなるかはまだわかりませんが、最高のオリンピックにするために全関係者が集まってスケジュールを協議しています。

タケ：OK（笑）今日もありがとうございました！

トム：あ、そうそう、一つお伝えしておきたいことがあるのですが、私は実は大会のペアリングに関わっていまして、来週のウィンダムチャンピオンシップの1stラウンドは木曜日の午後の時間帯に石川と松山がテレビに映ってくるようなティータイムを考えています。

タケ：え？本当に？

トム：同じ組になるかもしれません。まだわかりませんが。

タケ：石川と松山が同じ組！？

トム：前後の組か同じ組か、、まだわかりませんけど。

タケ：ワオ！それはすごいニュースですね。本当にありがとう！

トム：どういたしまして！

Take: Hello Tom,

Tom: Hi. How are you?

Take: Fine thank you. How are you?

Tom: I’m great. I’m enjoying watching the PGA championship today.

Take: I’m working for Golfnetwork as a golf annalist this week. I mean Commentator.

Tom: Oh, that’s great. I’m sure you are doing a great job.

Take: So, actually, I’ve been watching the tournament all two days. Today’s almost finished, and Jason Dufner is doing good.

Tom: Jason Dufner had a record tying round today. He shot 63.

Take: Ah-huh.

Tom: He is 26th person to shoot 63 in a major championship history. 5 times they’ve gone on to win so this is a historical round and to be honest he had about a 15 footer for 62 straight up the hill. He easily could have made it, but he hit a poor put and he ended up tap in for par. But 63 is pretty amazing. Now, Jim Furyk is only 1 storke behind and Furyk is on little bit of trouble on 17 and he has a hard 18th hole to play, so it looks like Jason Dufner will be your leader after 2 rounds.

Take: And also at 7 under, we have Adam Scott and Matt Kuchar.

Tom: Very good players. Adam Scott and Matt Kuchar, and the guys behind them, Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, these are all very good players, that no one surprise to see them at the top of the leaderboard.

Take: Who is your favorite this week?

Tom: You know, I was liking Lee Westwood before the week start and he got off to a good start with a 66. Yesterday, he was 4 under, but he backed up a little bit today shot 73, so he’s back to 1 under, so he’s 8 shots back right now and that might be too much to make up just in 36 holes.

Take: How about Tiger?

Tom: Tiger just hit another poor tee shot on 18. So I don’t hink Tiger really has a chance. He’s never come from behind to win on major championships, so I think his formula is like kind of what he did last week. Dominate early and kind of hold on to win. And he’s just not in control of his game. Not playing nearly as well as guy like Matsuyama and Ishikawa. They both played well.

Take: So Tom, we would like to know, you know USGA hosts the U.S.Open, R&A hosts The Open, and PGA of America hosts the PGA championship.

Tom: Yes.

Take: And the masters committee hosts the Masters. That’s all four majors on the planet.

Take: We’d like to know if you guys want to host a major tournament?

Tom: Well, we kind of think of a Players championship which is our premier event on PGA tour.

Take: Ah huh.

Tom: We kind of think of it as a major. But you know what, I think there is only going to be 4 majors. That’s what history is kind of dictated. And to be honest, if there is going to be another major, a 5th major, it might be an event in Asia. Where I think that’s where you know the growing population of great golfers around the world. And on the hills of the success of the Olympics, so I think that ,,, I think the Olympics will become the 5th major.

Take: But Champions tour have 5 majors, and LPGA have 5 majors, and the Players championship has the best amount of tournament purse among the other majors. So you must want to have that tournament as a major aren’t you?

Tom: Well, we would like it to be considered among the best tournaments, but we are not gonna just come out and call it a major. When you do that, it’s a bad clash. Cause of history. You know it’s players you need to call it a major, or the writers need to call it a major. If we call it a major, then the people will start saying that we are trying to force our hand.

Take: OK, So in 2016 we have Golf joining the Olympic games. Will you send the PGA tour members to the Olympics?

Tom: Yes, Absolutely.

Take: Are you sure?
Tom: I’m sure that the PGA tour is doing everything we can to help out the Olympics in 2016. We are going to set our schedule so that there won’t be any conflicts, so that the best players in the world can all play in the Olympics.
Take: Ah huh. Have you already been discussing about that with USGA?
Tom: The conversations have been going on. Executives from the tour and R&A and USGA, all the executives are meeting, they met at British open, and they just met again this week at PGA championship. I was at Oak hill on Wednesday, and the golf course was great, it’s too bad that it rained a little bit. It’s softened it up, now they are shooting pretty low scores.

Take: I think the International Olympics committee still haven’t decided the format for the Olympic games for golf.
Tom: No, They have decided. They are going to use 72 holes stroke play, kind of standard format for the all majors and all the tournaments on the PGA tour. And the qualifying process is also been determined, using the official world Golf ranking, and they are going to institute the process. They’ve changed the formats for the world cup, Cause that used to be just few players from each country, and now it’s gonna use the same qualification process as the Olympics. Trying get everybody up to speed and what should look like in couple of years.
Take: How many players each team?
Tom: I don’t know, it’s going to be I think a maximum of four players from each country.
Take: OK, and also you know 2016 Olympics at Rio, will be held in August. But the PGA
Championship is in August.
Tom: We are working with all the organization to create a schedule, so that there won’t be any conflicts and we’ll figure it out so that the Olympics will be show case.
Take: Which month do you think the PGA championship will be held in?
Tom: That’s a question I don’t know.
Take: OK (laugh). Thank you very much for joining us.
Tom: One thing I want to tell you that is, I’m involved in putting the pairings together, and next Thursday, at the Wyndham Championship, the last full field event on the PGA tour, I think both Ishikawa and Matsuyama will be playing in the TV window Thursday afternoon.
Take: Oh, Really?
Tom: Who knows, Maybe they’ll even be paired together. So we’ll have to see if that happens.
Take: You guys going to pair Ishikawa and Matsuyama together?
Tom: They might be.back to back in consecutive groups or they might be paired together.
Take: Oh wow. That’s beautiful. That’s a good news. Thank you very much for joining us Tom.
