トム： ヘイ！元気ですか？

タケ： 休暇はどうでした？（笑）

トム： 最高でしたよ。家族でアメリカの最北端、 メインの方に行って楽しい時間を過ごしました。涼しくて気持よかったですよ。

タケ： メインと言えばメインロブスター食べましたか？

トム： まさにそれを食べました（笑）

タケ： （笑）大きいやつ？

トム： 1.5ポンドくらいのやつです。最高に楽しかったですよ。

タケ： あとはクラムチャウダーでしょう？

トム： なぜ知ってるのですか？（笑）

タケ： 18年間もアメリカに住んでたから何でも知ってますよ（笑）

トム： すごい！本当にいろいろ知ってますよね。

タケ： （笑）さて、日本の若者たちはカナダ（カナディアンオープン）でがんばってますか？

トム： どれどれ見てみましょう。ハンター・メイハンがトップを走ってますね。

タケ： 今日64ですよね。すごい。

トム： 松山英樹はまた良い位置にいますね。今日3アンダーでトータル6アンダー、現在8位タイです。まだ2ホール残っていいて1つはパー5ですから、2日目終了時にトップ10に入る可能性がありますね。

タケ： 彼のことどう思いますか？

トム： オーマイガッ！彼は素晴らしい選手ですよ。全米オープンでトップ10入り、全英ではトップ6。素晴らしい形で全米デビューしましたね。

トム： 世界ランクのポイントも十分持っているので、来週のWGCブリヂストンインビテーショナルも出場できると思いますよ。まだわからないですが、タイガー・ウッズと日本の2人が同じ組になれば盛り上がりそうですね。

タケ： 石川はどんな感じですかね？

トム： えーっと、、

タケ： 今日1アンダーでフィニッシュしているので、63位タイ？

トム： そうですね。63位タイです。

タケ： 日本にもスポンサー推薦枠というのはあるのですが、アメリカのPGAツアーのスポンサー推薦枠はいくつあるのでしょうか？

トム： 1シーズンでスポンサー推薦で出場できるのは7回まで、すごく良いプレーをして昨年の賞金ランク125位の選手と同等の賞金を稼がない限りは7回までです。

タケ： なるほど。

トム： それが出来れば、スポンサー推薦で出場できる試合数が無制限になります。松山選手と同じ年、19歳のジョーダン・スピースがやったのがそれです。良いプレーができて、十分な賞金を稼いだのでスポンサー推薦の回数が無制限になり、その後ジョンディアクラシックで初優勝を達成したのです。これでフルタイムメンバー入りが確定しました。松山選手も優勝すれば当然フルタイムメンバーです。彼はアマチュアでしたが、ソニーオープンでスポンサー推薦を1回使ってますね。

タケ： それはカウントするのですか？

トム： カウントします。しかし、今年はシーズンが短くなったので、PGAツアーは残り試合が少なくなってきました。プレーオフの大会はスポンサー推薦の枠がないので、彼はおそらく来週のブリヂストンインビテーショナルでプレーして、それから全米プロですかね。それに、もしこのまま良いプレーが続けばウィンダムチャンピオンシップのスポンサー推薦も受けられるかもしれません。しかしそれで今シーズンはおしまいです。十分に良いプレーが出来なかった場合は、優勝するしかプレーオフに残る方法はないですね。

タケ： なるほど。ところで1大会のスポンサー推薦枠は何人くらいなのでしょうか？

トム： 大会によって違うけれども、少なければ6人、多ければ12人くらいです。

タケ： 昔はスポンサー推薦が2枠、大会コミッショナー枠が2枠だった気がしますが変わったのですね？

トム： そうそう。昔は誰を招待してもよい無制限の招待枠が2つと、条件つきの招待枠が2つありましたね。

タケ： そうかあ。松山は今年の終わりまで出場し続けられないのでしょうか？

トム： これから3週間は出ますよ。今週が終わればレギュラーシーズンはあと3試合しか残っていません。プレーオフに残るためにはフルタイムメンバーである必要があるので、そのためには優勝が必要です。あと3戦でなんとか結果を出して来年もプレーしてくれると良いのですが。

タケ： よくわかりました。ありがとうトム！

トム： どういたしまして。次回はプレーオフ真っ只中になると思われるので、とても楽しみです。ファンが熱狂するエキサイティングなシリーズ、日本のファンも注目し続けてくれてとても嬉しく思っています！

Take: Hello, Tom!

Tom: Hey, How are you?

Take: How was your vacation? (laugh)

Tom: Oh, It was great. We got away, and really enjoyed with the family; it was a lot of fun.

Take: You guys were going - anywhere? in the United States or outside of United States.?

Tom: We went to vacation in Main which is in the very northern part of the United States. So it’s a little bit cooler. Very pretty.

Take: Beautiful. Have you eaten Main lobster?

Tom: That’s exactly what we did. (laugh)

Take: (laugh) How big was it? Big?

Tom: Only about pond and a half, and we had a lot of fun.

Take: How about clam chowder?

Tom: How do you know we had a clam chowder? (laugh)

Take: I have been 18 years in United States. How could I miss. I know everything. (laugh)

Tom: You know all about it. That’s great!

Take: (laugh) So anyway, how are they doing? My Japanese boys at Canada.

Tom: Let’s see. Ah. Leaderboard in Canada, Hunter Mahan is running away with it right now.

Take: Unbelievable, 64 today?

Tom: Yes, and Hideki Matsuyama is right there again. He is 3 under today 6 under for the golf course, So he is tied for 8th, and he still has two holes to play, and one is a par 5, so he could finish , you know end up in the top 10 after 36 holes.

Take: How do you like him? You like him?

Tom: Oh my god, he is such a good player. Of course he had top 10 at the US Open, and even a top 6 at the British Open. He’s gotten off to a great carrier here in the United States.

Tom: He’s got enough world ranking point, so he is going to qualify for the Bridgestone Invitational, the world golf championship next week. And who knows, maybe you’ll be fun to see him paired with Tiger Woods, to see how both of them would do. And that would be pretty exciting for the fans in Japan right?

Take: Yes, absolutely. How about Ishikawa?

Tom: Let’s see how Ryo Ishikawa is doing…..

Take: Ryo Ishikawa finished 1 under today. Tied for 63rd?

Tom: Tied for 63, yes. 1 under.

Take: In Japan, we have sponsor exemption like PGA TOUR does, so how many sponsor exemptions do U.S. PGA TOUR have?

Tom: You are limited to 7 in one season.
Unless you play so well that you earned enough money that you would have made as much as a person who finished 125th on the previous years money list.

Take: Ah -hah.

Tom: And if you do that, then you can have an unlimited amount of exemptions. That’s something Jordan Spieth did. He is a 19 year old, you know basically the same age as Matsuyama. And he’s played reall well, and earned enough money to get unlimited sponsored exemption. So he got into many more tournaments and showed enough, and he got a win at the John Deere Classic, and now he is a full time member. And of course if Matsuyama get a win, then he would be a full time member on the PGA TOUR if he shows to accept it. He got one sponsor exemption when he played at Sony Open at Hawaii, but he was an amateur back then.

Take: Does it count?

Tom: That counts. However, you know with the shorter season this year, the PGA TOUR only have a few more events. There are no sponsor exemptions into the play-off events, so basically I expect him to play the world championship, the Bridgestone Invitational next week, then the following week he could play the PGA championship, and if he continues to play well, if he persuaded he probably could get a sponsors exemption in for the Wyndham Championship. But that would be it for the year. Unless he plays well enough, he would have to win to get exempt into the play-off.

Take: OK, So Tom, I would like to know how many sponsor exemption for each tournament.

Tom: Some have a few as a 6, and some have as many as 12.

Take: Oh, did it change? It used to be only 2, 2 sponsor exemptions and 2 commissioner exemptions.

Tom: Yes, two is kind of unlimited sponsor exemptions you can invite anyone you want, and there’s two that they have to have, certain restrictions on them based on certain parameters on the different skills of the players.

Take: So now, Hideki Matsuyama will be in the tournament until the end of this year?

Tom: He will be able to play the next three weeks, there’s only this week and there’s three more
official events until the regular season ends. And you have to be a full time member to play in the play-off, and he is not a member unless he wins. So he only has three more events here in the United States and then, hopefully he’ll continue to play well, well enough opportunity to try to qualify for next year.

Tom: Oh, It’s my pleasure! I can’t wait to talk to you next time because it will probably be around play-offs and that is really exciting for fans here in the States and I’m glad you guys are paying attention in Japan too.
